Today, I took advantage of my open Friday, and went to Pisa, Italy! It's crazy to me to think that I'm within a few hours train ride from the cities I've only dreamed of visiting. We left Bologna before 9:00am, and arrived in Pisa around 11:00am after a quick train change in Florence. We made the 25-30 minute walk (after stopping to eat lunch on a piazza) to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo (Cathedral), and the Baptistery. It was incredible to see them in real life after I had seen them on TV and in pictures. I was walking around thinking to myself it was so crazy I was here when it didn't even feel real that I was living in Italy. I guess you could say it hasn't hit me yet that I'm really in Europe. It seems like a dream where I've been transported to some other world for a little while. All I can say is that I feel so blessed to have this opportunity. I mean, who else can just take a day trip to any Italian (or European) city of their choosing? It's still so surreal!
We took goofy pictures and acted like complete tourists in front of the Leaning Tower, and we also got to go inside the Duomo -my first time in a European cathedral! It was beautifully ornate as I knew it would be. I was amazed by the sheer size and architectural design of the arches, mosaics, and frescoes. It was truly beautiful. We couldn't leave before grabbing some Italian gelato, and then off we went back to Bologna. It was a whirlwind trip, but I wouldn't have wanted to spend my Friday any other way.
